When discussing how, exactly, to present a site entitled “Satan Wrote the Bible,” Thomas D, the dreamer-upper as he refers to himself, wrote:
My goal is to get some religious folks thinking about their religion and life. My big goal is to get people to understand the difference between knowledge and belief or faith. Religion will never go away. Hitler couldn’t exterminate Judaism any more than Stalin could get Russians to give up their faith but if we could just get people to say “This is what I believe but I don’t know. Your belief is as valid as mine,” that could make a real difference.
As a website builder and search engine marketer, I usually create sites to sell products or services. What a welcome relief to be hired to help get folks thinking. For one, the discovery process that led to the site design was completely different. Where product presentation is usually a concern that is never completely satisfied, the presenting of ideas like these requires clear, clean, orderly, logical, and consistent presentation. OK, maybe they’re not so different.
My philosophical background (I still write a philosophy and politics blog) certainly prepared me for this kind of work. My background has also made me curious. Who could resist working on this kind of subject matter for a folksy philosopher? After all, nothing’s more folksy than calling people folks. As Thomas D put it in another email:
While we have been learning so much about the world over the past 2 millennia learning or even thought about how best to live our lives with others has been stifled. I’d love to be part of getting thinking started again.
How could I say no? When you have a goal like that for a website, it’s hard to go wrong.
