Jehovah’s Witness

I had a lovely conversation with a Jehovah’s Witness recently. As she turned to leave she paused and looked back to express the very thought that was on my mind. “I enjoyed this. We listened to each other.”

She couldn’t understand how I could write an essay “Satan Wrote the Bible” and yet I claimed not to believe in Satan.

“Do you believe there is a Satan?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then the essay is for you. It is written for those who believe in personifications of Good and Evil and who think the personification of Good, God, caused the writing of the Bible. I read Job with great care many times trying to understand what was being said. I really don’t think I was trying to find what I found.”

“You found that Satan wrote the Bible?”

“I found that Satan comes across as being smarter than God and that led me to the notion that Satan wrote the Bible.”

“But you don’t believe there is a Satan?”

“Right.”

“But you believe Satan wrote the Bible?”

“I believe the Bible was written by young men who thought the world was flat.” [I have been corrected: “humans have known the to be earth a sphere since 240 BC.” see comments for more.]

At this she turned to a page in the Bible and read, “Isaiah 40:22 There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth.” She referred to another passage about space indicating that we are but a small part of the universe. Then she asked, “Young men?”

“Just a flip comment based on life expectancy 2,500 years ago,” I replied.

In this exchange I implied that I read Job objectively. I certainly tried but it is likely that if I had believed God wrote the Bible, I would have come to a different conclusion. I do think I was a leg up on someone reading the Bible to substantiate his or her belief. It is incredibly difficult to read anything objectively but well worth the effort to try.

  1. Technically humans have known the Earth to be a sphere since approximately 240 BC. The man that calculated within 2% of the actual circumference of the Earth went on to make the latitude and longitude lines we know on globes today. What was out in the vast ocean wasn’t known though. This is something that gets promoted throughout history. In particular when the abolitionists rebelled against the catholics they started the rumor up again I believe. But regardless we knew the Earth was round by the time the catholics collaborated and wrote their book.

I agree that Satan (evil) was the primary endorsement for creation of the bible. How do you get people to follow you… write a book. Just because someone wrote it must make it true! I appreciate the story of Jesus but know it was written by wicked men. The old testament in general should be removed from the bible and burned. Large portions of the new testament too need removed. I’d at least like to review the Greek and Hebrew texts one day when I’m old and have more time on my hands :-)

Until then I stand by my “Jefferson Bible” when I do feel the need to read good old stories. Well that or my friend likes to read scripture to me. :-)

  2. I would like to join in to your conversation. I seem to understand the Bible a little differently. To start with, some hard info to find, Satan was cast down to Earth on the second of creation. This info is still in the Eastern Christian Bible in the “Book of Enoch”. Why was it removed from the Western Christian Bible? Good question.

    • You are right, CJ, it is a good question. I don’t think it is likely found in any of the books of the Bible, however. Fact: The books of the Bible were all written by men. Belief: The writing of some, all, some parts of the Bible were influenced by something outside the known world. I repeat, that is a belief; it is unknown. I make a case for Satan influencing the writing of the Bible. I don’t believe it and I certainly can’t prove it any more than the notion God influenced the writing of the Bible can be proven. I actually believe people writing the books of the Bible were acting in good faith; that they were telling their stories, refining them and writing them with good intentions.
To your question why was something removed from the Western Christian Bible I would answer that lots was removed, lots was rewritten and lots was added over the years. There are a number of Books, including The Book of Thomas (source of my pseudonym), that those putting the Bible together chose not to include. The Bible was put together 362 years after the life of Jesus which leaves, 15 to 20 generations, for changes. It is a shame that over the course of those three centuries words were put in the mouth of the philosopher/psychiatrist Jesus that went counter to his central message of love.
