After satisfactorily proving his own existence Descartes went on to try to prove God’s.

I recognize that it would be impossible for me to exist with the kind of nature I have–that is, having within me the idea of God–were it not the case that God really existed. By ‘God’ I mean the very being the idea of whom is within me, that is, the possessor of all the perfections which I cannot grasp, but can somehow reach in my thought, who is subject to no defects whatsoever. [Meditation III, paragraph 38]

Descartes says that his existence includes the perception of a perfect God and that the perception was not learned but came directly from God. When God made Descartes he programmed him with a belief in a perfect being. I accept his perception that his understanding of God was implanted in his existence. How could I possible challenge it? If he were alive, we could discuss the difference in our perceptions. However, it is unlikely that either of us would be changed. Anyway, he’s dead.
I believe that my knowledge and understanding of “God” (the god most religions refer to) comes from things that have shaped me since my birth. I joined a church, went to Sunday school, listened to sermons, read the Bible, read many books that expressed ideas concerning God and have listened to many people express their understanding of God. I classify the experiences in the previous sentence as second-hand or coming from others of my species in this perception that I recognize as my life. I have also experienced blazingly colorful sunsets, towering mountains, the ocean’s roar and power, the tinkling sound of a rill in a brook, a baby’s grip, the smoothness of a thigh, and the explosion of flavor released by a vine-ripened tomato. I classify these experiences as first-hand and not coming from others of my species. They come through the senses that are attached to my body, the vessel that is central to my perceptions. To which should I give more credence in my search for an understanding of a god, that which comes from others of my species or that which comes from I know not where?
If Descartes had been raised by wolves and had no contact with belief passed on through people, his argument would be excellent. As is it holds no water.
Is there a God and, if so, what is the nature of God? I exist and I perceive this thing that I call my life and everything contained in it. I don’t know anything beyond that. I don’t perceive through first-hand knowledge anything beyond that. The notions of things outside my perception that I call my life come from others–notions of life after death, reincarnation, heaven, hell, a supreme being watching over me.
One of those notions is the big bang theory of how the universe came to be. That is based on scientists’ perception as they study the universe that everything in the universe is moving away from everything else at a rapid speed. They determine this by the color of light they can see and an understanding that the color is a wave and that changing the wave length will change the light. Light moving away from the perceiver will be different from light moving toward the perceiver because the wave lengths are elongated or compressed respectively. I have not directly observed this phenomenon but I am willing to accept it from the things I have read. All the scientists know is what they are observing, the color of the light coming through space. They believe the color indicates that everything in space is moving away from us. From that they have formed the theory that the universe is exploding.
Our sun was a bit in the explosion. It got spinning around and some chunks were thrown off forming our solar system. Our planet cooled down and as it cooled life came into being. Single celled life that evolved into life as we know it on Earth today.
If you buy that, as to how we came to be, and I do, you are still left with how did the material form that was involved in the big bang? I am not aware of any scientific theory answering that question. It is an interesting question to ponder and questioning the big bang theory and evolution are also worthwhile stimulus for thought. However, it seems unlikely that I will ever, within this life, come to an assurance of how the world came into being. Even if science came to a reasonable answer… Well, I can’t imagine such a thing so I can’t finish that sentence. I like the ancient explanation that the world rides on the back of a giant elephant and the elephant stand on the back of a giant turtle. When asked what the turtle stands on the subject was changed.
Rather than search for something for the turtle to stand on or anything in between I am content to credit “God”. What is God? My creator. What am I? A thinking being that perceives what I call my life which includes everything within my perception. Please don’t add any frills or extras to “my creator”. I have no notion what kind of an entity “my creator” might be—if I was created in its image, if it is a committee, a blob, a vapor or something totally inconceivable. My “creator” or “God” is nothing more than a word to use for the dead end that my thoughts and thinking through the ages has come to.

THOMAS Hi JC, You talked a lot about love—love your neighbor, love your enemies, judge not,—but you never define it or tell us how to do it.

JC Sure I do. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a good example of loving your enemies.

THOMAS That’s really a story of compassion. I get that compassion is an example of a loving act and that it can be done as a conscious act but it is sympathy or pity for someone’s misery or suffering. What about loving enemies who aren’t miserable or suffering?

JC Name one.

THOMAS Are you saying that everyone is miserable? Now you sound like L. Ron Hubbard.

JC (laughing) That’s a good one! No, you are right, everyone is not miserable.

THOMAS Plus, if everyone were miserable, would they have the energy to show compassion?

JC Of course there are so many people who are miserable you can always find someone to feel compassion for.
THOMAS But you made loving neighbors and enemies sound so much more wonderful than just feeling compassion or pity. I even have this notion of heaven as a place much like earth with the significant difference that everyone loves everyone.

JC Of course I can’t tell you what heaven is like or even if there is a life after death but that is a nice image. Why do you even have thoughts about life after death? As I look at it you are having a pretty nice life. Why think about something more?

THOMAS Yeah. I guess my thoughts along those lines are for the purpose of living this life better.

JC You want this life to be better?

THOMAS No. Not really. It’s like playing golf. I don’t want the course to change, to get better. I just want to get better at my game because the better I play, the more enjoyable the game is.

JC What if you became perfect at the game and shot eagles and holes in one every time?

THOMAS I’d probably quit like I quit playing video games when they stop being a challenge.

JC So if you perfect living, you’ll kill yourself?

THOMAS My turn to laugh. Perfect living? No matter how many times I rewrite our dialogue, it will never be perfect. I have lived some amazingly wonderful days but I doubt that any could be counted “perfect”. I often tell people that if I ever perfect gardening, I’ll quite because it is the challenge I love most. I love solving problems.

JC You asked me how to love. You must know the answer since you just said you love solving problems.

THOMAS Loving something I do is not the same as loving a person.

JC But what did you mean when you used the word?

THOMAS I meant I enjoy it; I enjoy challenges and solving problems. I sure don’t feel compassion for the problems, I can tell you that.

JC Before you got married did you want to love somebody and would you consider that a challenge?

THOMAS I wanted to get laid and I loved the challenge and solving the problem. Frankly, I don’t recall considering finding a wife or soul mate a challenge or problem. Did I want to love someone? Actually it was more of a challenge to make it clear that I did not want to commit to anyone so I was always careful not to use the word love.

JC But now you have been married for 40 years.

THOMAS Yes.

JC To the same woman.

THOMAS Yes.

JC Do you love her?

THOMAS Yes. Without hesitation, yes. More now than when we were married.

JC You sound like an expert on love.

THOMAS If there were such a thing, I’d take out papers. Yeah, I think I know a lot about…no, I take that back. I know how to make love. I know how to get along with my wife…most of the time. When I wish newly weds well I tell them if they want it to last, they will have to work at it, that the wedding is not the end but just the beginning and when I talk to couples who have been married for a long time they nod in agreement when I compliment them on all the work they have put in to stay married all those years. But I’m still not sure I know what love is.

JC What is the work that keeps a marriage going?

THOMAS Oh, gosh. It’s a lot of little things. Early on it is trying to keep out of trouble. (laughs) OK here’s one—Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving is our favorite holiday—food, friend, family—what could be better. We have hosted it for nearly forty years. It took me several years to figure out how to get through this wonderful time without pissing my wife off. First, the house needs to be cleaned for company. Then there is the stress of cooking a big meal involving a big bird. I say it took several years. To be honest it was probably 25 or 30 before I was able to keep her happy through the ordeal. First it was don’t watch football, then don’t even sit down. Some of this seemed unfair to me until I got a better idea of what was going on with her. She was very busy, albeit doing things she likes to do, and seeing me sitting around rankled. Then I figured out that life got a lot better if I asked her if there was anything I could do to help. Sometimes there were, at which point I jumped right to it because putting it off pissed her off. When the job was done I’d report back for the next assignment. There seldom was a second assignment in which case I was allowed to sit down and read or whatever but then I wasn’t a bump on a log but a servant in waiting.

JC So you were able see her position—you empathized with her.

THOMAS Yeah, I guess that’s it. Oh, and I also found that random acts of kindness like doing the dishes without being asked gain points. There are certain times when I do the dishes and we both understand it is my job like Thanksgiving and certain nights of the week but I get extra points for just doing them when not expected to.

JC Empathy again.

THOMAS If empathy is so important, why didn’t you say so? Why didn’t you say “Empathize with thy neighbor” instead of “love thy neighbor?”

JC I did.

THOMAS Not that I read.

JC Keep in mind that none of my words as you read them was written by me. They were written by good men who thought I spoke wisdom and they wanted to spread the wisdom to everyone. In the process they added some things and left out some things and then those words were transcribed by hand many times over and translated into other languages. Let me ask you; is there anything about your wife that you wish were different?

THOMAS Sure.

JC More than one thing.

THOMAS Two pop to mind. If I think about, I can probably come up with more.

JC Do you wish she would change certain things?

THOMAS Not going to happen.

JC You tried?

THOMAS Yeah, always a big mistake.

JC So you just accept her as she is?

THOMAS Yes, I don’t think I have a choice.

JC I tried to teach acceptance.

THOMAS (excited) Of our enemies, our neighbors, our friends and family, of everyone! Why doesn’t it say that in the Bible?

JC I think it comes through best in my parables. I think they came through best because they were stories that were easier to remember and to translate.

THOMAS “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

JC Yes. I love that one because it turns judgment inward where it belongs and it employs empathy and acceptance not only of the woman who was going to be stoned but to those who were going to stone her.

THOMAS We are allowed to empathize with ourselves?

JC No one better. If you can’t get inside your own mind, you’ve got little chance to get into another’s. Remember “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? Unless you know yourself, empathize with yourself, accept yourself; how can what you do to others be right?

THOMAS I’m not sure I understand.

JC Love yourself first if you want to love others.

THOMAS May I ask another question, this is kind of personal?

JC Shoot.

THOMAS Why did you say “I am the way”?

JC Why do you ask?

THOMAS It just doesn’t seem very loving. How can I love everyone and at the same time say if you don’t believe the way I do, you are going to rot in hell?

JC You are right. That statement is contrary to my teaching of love. I never said that.

THOMAS But it’s in the Bible.

JC Written several years after I died by men who wanted to spread my teachings and thought that the addition of that sentiment would help them get people’s attention; same as walking on water, rising from the dead and that my mother was a virgin.

THOMAS They lied.

JC No reason to be so harsh. They were good men who fervently wanted to deliver the word so people would have good lives. Those embellishments were just to get people to pay attention.

THOMAS Today there are people who say it is more important to be your disciple than to follow your teachings—more important to go to church and to say your name a lot than to be loving.

JC Well, there’s not much I can do about that, is there?

THOMAS How about coming back like they think you will.

JC They would crucify me. Been there, done that.

Can you really respect a God that dished out the Ten Commandments? Would you respect a boss who laid down such commandments? How about if the leader of your country acted like God.

So you got a new job, it was the only job available so you really had no choice and you boss is laying down the law

1. I am the boss. I am your only boss. You shall have no other boss than me, ever.
2. Don’t even think about another boss or another job. I am a jealous son of a bitch and if I ever catch one of you even thinking about leaving here you will regret it. Not only will I make your life miserable but I will make your family’s life miserable, even your grandchildren’s lives.
3. It’s OK for me to call myself a SOB but you better not call me anything but Mr. Boss and Sir and it better sound sincere—no snide remarks behind my back either because I can see and hear everything that goes on not only here at work but even in your homes.
4. I built this factory in six days, believe it or not. A little joke there. You don’t really have a choice. You must believe it. I found it a good thing to rest on the seventh day and what is good for me is good for you. You, too, shall do no work on the seventh day but rather you must spend the day thinking about me. You will have to fast on the seventh day because I forbid you from letting anyone else work either. Perhaps, you could eat any food that was lying around, you know, just so you don’t work or cause anyone else to work and as long as you are thinking of me. Maybe you could, like, pick up an apple and look at it and say, “oh, beloved boss of mine thank you for giving me a wonderful job so that I can have this day to love and respect you and thank you for allowing me to eat this apple.”
5. This may be a little difficult to follow because I am the supreme boss who you must honor but you should also honor your father and mother, just not as much as you honor me. They aren’t supreme bosses like I am but they are there when I’m not so I kind of relinquish some power to them, because, you know, I can’t be everywhere all the time. But don’t forget that my spy-cams are everywhere.
6. You are not allowed to kill another worker. That’s a no-brainer. Once you start working for me, you are mine and nobody, but nobody, takes anything that is mine. It’s good for you too since everybody else is also forbidden to kill (There will be some exceptions when I will tell you to kill people. More on that later.)
7. Don’t fuck anybody but your own spouse. I told you that I was jealous so it’s only natural that some of that trait might wear off on others. Anyway adultery is just not a good thing. It’s not good for company moral.
8. No stealing. Hey, would you want someone to steal from you? OK? So don’t steal.
9. Don’t say false things about your neighbor.
10. Do not covet anybody else’s house, ditto anybody else’s wife, or his servants or his SUV.
Got it? Any questions?

Yes, Sir. What does covet mean?

It means want, desire, get a hard-on for.

Oh. Sir, are the covet things listed in order of importance? I mean, is it more important not to covet his house than his wife? And if I can’t even desire my neighbor’s wife, isn’t the adultery thing redundant?

OK, time to get back to work.

Oh, oh, Mr. Boss. Are we allowed to lie?

Read number 9.

But that just says don’t spread untrue rumors about people.

It means don’t lie.

But why didn’t you…

Oh, I forgot number 11. No questions. Actually I didn’t forget because I’m infallible. I was just teasing you.

If you are religious and you question your religious leader about the Ten Commandment and press for answers beyond the point where the only answer is “it’s a leap of faith”, your religious leader may invoke the eleventh commandment.

Run this same exercise for the leader of a country rather than the leader of a business and you may find yourself describing Moamer Kadhafi, Saddam Hussein. or Kim Jong-Il.
The Ten Commandments do not describe a loving or a lovable God. But, hey, you better accept them as God’s word or He will make you suffer for eternity which, as I understand it, is a long time

Bible Believer:if Satan wrote the Bible, why is there so much good in it?
Thomas: Is Satan stupid?
BB: No! He is very smart. That is how he is able to lure us to do things we shouldn’t.
Thomas: What is his mission?
BB: To get us to do bad things.
Thomas: Like destroying God’s creation?
BB: Yes.
Thomas: Are we part of God’s creation?
BB: Yes.
Thomas: Do you believe God gave you your body with senses of smell, sight, touch, hearing, the pleasure of sex?
BB: Yeah, I guess.
Thomas: You guess?
BB: Well, I’m not sure about sex. That might be Satan.
Thomas: Is sex something other than a wonderful combination of the senses, might I say climax?
BB: Yeah, but Satan can get in our mind and make us do things we shouldn’t.
Thomas: Sex is something we shouldn’t do?
BB: Right, unless it is between a man and a woman and only because they are married and want to have children.
Thomas: You are married. Have you had sex with your wife other than to have children? Do you masturbate?
BB: Yes, but that is because Satan makes me do it.
Thomas: Your sexual urges come from Satan? How does Satan do that? I understand that he is smart but he did not create your body, the body that has the sexual urges.
BB: He gets in my mind.
Thomas: Your God-given mind?
BB: Well, yeah, but I’m weak.
Thomas: Your mind is weak?
BB: Yeah.
Thomas: Your God-given weak mind gives in to the pleasures of your God-given body? How does it make you feel when you “are weak?”
BB: I feel bad because I’m not doing what God wants me to do.
Thomas: How do you know what God wants you to do?
BB: It’s in the Bible.
Thomas: If it weren’t for the Bible, you would enjoy sex without feeling bad? Have I got that right? If God had written a manual for life saying “I have given you a body with senses that can bring you great pleasure and joy; I have given you a mind that will help you enjoy your life; I have given you plants and animals, mountains and oceans if you take care of them they will feed your body and soul all the days of your life; if that were God’s word, would you feel bad when you used your body?
BB: I guess not but that’s not what he said.
Thomas: Can Satan influence people? Could he influence what people write or say?
BB: He’s sure influencing what you are writing. Yes.
Thomas: Is my writing influencing you?
BB: Hell no!
Thomas: Do you think Satan could work through religions to get people to go astray?
BB: Just look at history. He does some of his best work that way.
Thomas: Through other religions, not yours?
BB: Right, there are lots of religions out there that have lost their way.
Thomas: What is your religion?
BB: Lutheran.
Thomas: So Catholics have lost their way?
BB: Absolutely! Martin Luther established that.
Thomas: And Jews have lost their way?
BB: They killed Christ didn’t they?
Thomas: And Mormons?
BB: I don’t really know much about them but unless they believe the only way to heaven is through Christ, why, yeah, they are on the wrong track.
Thomas: Muslims?
BB: Isn’t that obvious?
Thomas: So, Satan is winning? All those millions of people who aren’t Lutherans have been won over by Satan even though all of those people believe in the Bible, the same Bible you believe in. They follow, or at least try to follow, the Ten Commandments, just as you do. All but the Jews believe Jesus was holy.
BB: Not Muslims.
Thomas: Actually, they do but they have a more recent prophet who created another holy book, the Koran. Mormons have the most recent prophet to whom the Book of Mormon came directly from God much as the Ten Commandments came to Moses. The Jews have the oldest word from God and the Mormons have the most recent. What makes the Lutherans special?
BB: I just know they are. It is my faith.
Thomas: I respect your faith as long as it makes you happy. However, if it makes you unhappy, I suggest you question it. You believe Satan is smart and that he can work through religions. Perhaps you should use your mind to make sure you are not following Satan, to make sure Satan is not taking away anything God gave you.

The 12th century monk, St. Bernard, carried his piety to an exhausting asceticism; he fasted so much that his superior had to command him to eat; and for thirty-eight years he lived in one cramped cell, with a bed of straw and no seat but a cut in the wall. All the comforts and goods of the world seemed to him as nothing compared with the thought and promise of Christ. He wrote in this mood several hymns of unassuming simplicity and tenderness:
Jesus sweet in memory,
Giving the heart true joy,
Yea, beyond honey and all things,
Sweet is His presence.
Nothing sung is lovelier,
Nothing heard is pleasanter,
Nothing thought is sweeter
Than Jesus the Son of God.
I believe this world, this life as revealed through the senses, is to be enjoyed to the fullest, that life is a gift that should be used well. How different from this monk who “covered his eyes least they take too sensual a delight from the lakes of Switzerland.” Yet I believe he had a good life. Though he turned his back on creation caring little for any but spiritual beauty I respect him for living his life without conflict with his belief. He didn’t deprive himself of worldly experience with the expectation of a reward after death or as an example to others or to be sanctified. He did it because it was beautiful to him because it was the right way for him to live his life and that is beautiful.
I, like him, live as I do because it is the right way for me and it is beautiful. I am happy for both of us. I can’t wish more for anyone than that they figure out what is best for them independently of what others (ie writers and interpreters of religions) try to dictate as being what is “right”

Quorto- You say God gave us our mind so, clearly, you believe in God.
Thomas- If that is your conclusion, it should, at the least, not be clear.
Quorto- You don’t believe in God?
Thomas- I will give you the simplest, most direct answer I can. I do not believe in God as depicted in the Old Testament, New Testament, Qur’an or any other religious doctrine I’m aware of.
Quorto- What’s with “God-given mind” then?
Thomas- I am speaking to those who believe God gave them their mind. I do not mean to imply there is a God. Have you ever tried to have a reasoned discussion of religious belief with a fundamentalist of any religion?
Quorto- Yes.
Thomas- How did it turn out?
Quorto- In a draw, I guess. He said I just didn’t understand; that I had to have faith.
Thomas- There you have it, he ended the discussion with a leap of faith. When that happens to me I suggest he leave his leap of faith behind and use his God-given mind in the hope he will recognize that when he takes the “leap” he is abandoning his mind; abandoning what he would say is a gift from God.

While four of the Ten Commandments are bull shit and nothing a loving god would command there are some good things in the Bible. Leviticus 19:18, “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” That is from a god I could support. Jesus takes that up a notch in Matthew 6:44 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you…” What a guy!
The Bible should not be taken literally as it is mostly myth and what is not myth was passed down by word of mouth for generations before being written and the written word was copied by many different hands over and over. In that process embellishment has certainly occurred and some changes were made simply as an expedient of the time such as the date of the birth of Jesus. However, it is a mistake to throw out the good with the bad or to try to make the bad good because of the truisms. Those who believe in God should use their God-given mind to sort out the gems from the junk. Those who don’t believe in God can use their mind without the need of a creator.

If you don’t recognize that as expletives expelled at the time of sexual climax, you will have to take my word for it that God is often invoked at the height of ecstasy. I have done both primary and secondary research and found it to be the case in English and Spanish and I suspect it is the case in most languages; at least that is my premise.
It hardly seems reasonable for men and women to call out to the God of the Bible at this time since Jewish, Christian and Muslim gods all seem to be down on sex—don’t masturbate, don’t have sex for any purpose other than procreation and Muslims seem to think that a man should not even look at a woman lest he be aroused. I don’t think when people call out “Oh, God”, or “Jesus!”, or “Dios, mio!” that they are thinking, “Oh God, forgive me for I have sinned.”
Consider the possibility that we are calling out to the God that gave us our life. It seems more likely that we are calling out “Thank you! Oh, God, thank you.” That God is quite different from the God so many worship through their religions. That is a sensual god, a god who gave us our senses of smell, touch, taste, sight, sound—senses that all work together during sexual intercourse to a crescendo, an explosion of feeling.
Shouldn’t we seek out the God who gave us those senses rather than worshiping a God conceived by men over two millennia ago? We know so much more about our world now than they knew then. By clearing our heads of that ancient concept of God, perhaps we can conceive of a God that will work better in the 21st century.

The God you believe in is a rotten, vindictive, not very bright son of a bitch. You throw your hands up in shock and pray for me because I’m surely going to Hell? Read the Bible! Read the juicy parts where God tells you how to treat your slaves. Here’s a fun story in Exodus 32 where God, through Moses, saith go “throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.” And, by golly, that day they killed about 3,000 men. That is the God of the Bible. Is that really your God?
I could come up with a better God. In fact, I have. Wait a minute. You have come up with a better God. I’m betting the God you believe in, the God you worship is, better than the God you will read about in the Bible. You think they are one and the same but, don’t trust me, read the God damned Bible. That jerk thought slavery was just fine. Why? Because slavery was just fine at the time the Bible stories were being invented. If “God” had come out against slavery, he would have had no chance gaining the hearts and minds of the people of his time. Oh, sure, he could have attracted the slaves but, hell, they were slaves. They weren’t in power. There was no chance of getting the middle class free men to latch onto a god who advocated something so foreign to their way of life.
Dump the Bible and think for yourself. Dump those who want to interpret the Bible for you, the priests, pastors, popes, bishops, ministers, imams, rabies and all the rest. Their interpretation is designed to enslave you. Be a slave to your own conscience. You, if you have come to this site, have a sense of right and wrong. You don’t need a heaven or hell to guide you.

Whether you believe there is one god, no god or many gods, your belief is no better than any of the others. You may believe in a compassionate god while others believe in a vengeful god. You are no closer to the truth than the others. No one knows there is or isn’t a god.
Perhaps the greatest good, certainly a great goal, for the future would be to have all people come to an understanding of the difference between knowledge and belief. Every belief is valid. I can make a case for there being four hermaphrodite Gods with purple hair who created the universe through a monster collision which is how they mate. The collision, of course, was a big bang and you can take it from there. Should I go a little farther? One of the purple haired Gods is my conscience, another plays with my conscience, testing it, another provides the world through which I pass, my perceptions, and the fourth is in charge of my interaction with other people.
Understanding the difference between belief and knowledge doesn’t diminish anyone’s belief. It might actually strengthen it because others would not be putting down your belief as being inferior to theirs. Imagine a world without religious conflict. Wow!
Whether you believe in a single god, several, many or none only makes a difference in how that belief affects the way you live your life. Those who feel others should believe as they do feel that way simply because in their heart of hearts they know they don’t know—if everyone believed as they did, they could feel totally comfortable with their belief. Since that isn’t going to happen, wouldn’t it be better to accept the simple fact that belief is not knowledge.
